Should SNL Bring Stefon to the Big Screen?

$

The Saturday Night Live-watching crowd seems to have arrived at a consensus: They are wild for Stefon, the tweaked-out club kid who frequents Weekend Update with his latest take on Trash, Push, Crease or whatever “the hottest” nightspot of the moment happens to be. And that makes us wonder-slash-worry: Could Bill Hader’s Stefon be the next SNL character to leap onto the big screen?

Yes, MacGruber — spun off of Will Forte’s SNL send-up of TV’s MacGyver — performed abysmally at the box office this summer, but when has critical or financial blowback stopped TV’s long-running sketch series from graduating another of its favorite children to the cineplex?

C’mon, admit it — you kinda do want a longer peek inside Stefon’s wee-hours world, populated as it is by Furkels, Muslim Elvis impersonators and slip-n-sliding fat kids with biscuit-like knees who only look like Mick Jagger.

Or, are the Stefon sketches enjoyable in large part due because of Hader’s tendency to break mid-rave, especially when trying to describe what a “fire hydrant” is. (Refresher: That’s a high-waisted midget with a big backside, clad in red.)

Wishing a new SNL movie upon us, though, could be a form of courting disaster. Because while hopping clubs with Stefon might be fun, it could also mean that Kristen Wiig’s naughty Gilly will one day spend 90 straight minutes saying “What?” Meaning, for every (original) Blues Brothers or Wayne’s World, there have been far more feature follies akin to It’s Pat, A Night At The Roxbury or (shudder) Stuart Saves His Family.

Do you think SNL should try to resist any future big-screen dreams? Or is there a current recurring character that could benefit from a trip to the theater?

Saturday Night Live With Charlie Day Hits Season-High Ratings: What Were the Best/Worst Skits?

$

As It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia powers through its seventh season, it’s no surprise that star Charlie Day was as polished as a urethane bowling ball in his SNL hosting debut. The winsome actor played deadpan and delirious at just the right moments, and he was well served by an above-average stack of skits — except for that nonsense Dolphin Tale send-up, which struck fear into sea creatures everywhere (including naughty seahorse Adam Levine). All in all, an admirable episode — and one that in fact netted SNL its best 18-49 demo rating of the season, since its May finale.

Here are my picks for the best two skits, along with one hopelessly waterlogged loser.

BEST: Kim’s Fairytale Divorce
This week, Kim Kardashian received the last item on her wedding registry — a divorce — and it’s America’s job to be outraged. This pre-taped sketch was obligatory, unsurprising, and so, so very funny. Special props go to Taran Killam, whose Bruce Jenner impersonation deserves a gold medal in the DecathLOL.

BEST: Weekend Update
Controversial pick? Yes, W.U. ran a bit long this week, but that doesn’t mean Bill Hader’s Rick Perry impression was less than sensational (“I’m so bad at talking, Seth.”), or that Seth Meyers’s joke about The Real House Mice of Avenue A wasn’t a triumph. And just when I thought Judy Grimes needed to buy an inhaler and disappear for good, Kristen Wiig rides again with a nervous streak so chirpy and skittish, it could’ve been the lost verse to “Moves Like Jagger.”

WORST: Dolphin Movie
Dolphin-themed movies are ripe for parody, but this sketch took an odd angle on the genre by mocking the loudness of animal training. As a rule, it’s a problem when the the funniest line in a sketch is, “I just got hit in the face with a fish!” What is this, The Amanda Show? Kenan, your SNICK past is showing.

What did you think of this week’s SNL? Was the Cee Lo sketch worthier of Top 2 inclusion? Did that vaguely pretentious ode to Greek gods thrill you? Most importantly, did musical guest Maroon 5 provide you with a sufficient amount of pop-rock dorkiness for the winter? I’m fully satisfied. What to Watch: 5 Web Series Worth Checking Out

Rob Michael Hugel (I Hate Being Single) turns up on a quirky vlog to give dating advice, the online arm of Lorne Michaels’ production company premieres two new web series with Saturday Night Live stars, and First Dates’ Toby Harris (Seth Morris) might actually land a second date.

Coffey Chat | If you miss Hugel (I Hate Being Single), this is the perfect way to get your RMH fix. He offers up tips on dating with Shannon Coffey on her web show Coffey Chat. None of the advice is what you would call practical, but it’s all chuckle-worthy.

Burning Love | Mark (Ken Marino) has a one-on-one with the cougar of the house, 84-year-old Agnes (Helen Slayton-Hughes). Will she be sent home to Sunny Acres or will Mark give her his hose?! Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) also returns as Mark’s therapist.

First Dates | A self-help junkie suggests Toby read The Secret and make a vision board so he can pull himself out of his unhappiness rut. Aptly titled “Optimism,” this episode ends on a hopeful note.

The Front Desk | 30 Rock’s John Lutz stars in this new web series about the wacky things that can happen at the front desk of a hotel. Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader guests in the first episode.

The Assistant | Abby Elliott (Saturday Night Live) plays an oblivious executive searching for a new assistant to help her with things like “how money works.”

Mass layoffs rock Bob’s Burgers this Sunday (Fox, 8:30/7:30c) when Bob, worried he’s depriving his children of a summer vacation, fires them from the restaurant!

And the staffing shake-up doesn’t end there.

Before the ink on the kids’ pink slips have time to dry, Bob and Linda’s bank robber pal Mickey (once again voiced by Saturday Night Live‘s Bill Hader) bursts through the door looking for a job.

Bill Hader Announces Saturday Night Live Departure: 'It Has to Happen at Some Point'

R.I.P. Stefon.

Bill Hader has tendered his resignation at Saturday Night Live, with this weekend’s season finale serving as his swan song.

“It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point,” Hader told The New York Times. “It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’”

RELATED | Seth Meyers Poised to Exit SNL: Who Should Replace Him at ‘Weekend Update’?

Hader joined SNL in 2005 and quickly became known for his spot-on celebrity impersonations of James Carville, Al Pacino, and Julian Assange. But it was an original creation — flamboyant “Weekend Update” city correspondent Stefon — that made him a household name.

News of Hader’s departure comes as SNL faces the loss of several other key castmembers, including Late Night-bound Seth Meyers and chronic question Jason Sudeikis. There’s buzz that Fred Armisen may be on his way out too.

PHOTOS | Saturday Night Live: 25 Dream Hosts

SNL EP Lorne Michaels tells the Times that Sudeikis and Armisen are in the process of “making their decisions,” adding, “I’ve said what I wanted to say to both. You never keep anybody there who doesn’t want to be there, and there is a right time to leave, but it’s more about where they are in their lives.”

Ben Affleck Hosts Saturday Night Live: What Were the Best and Worst Sketches?

$

Fans hoping that Saturday Night Live might close out its lackluster 38th season on a strong note probably abandoned that sense of optimism after the evening’s first three sketches (not counting the opening monologue or that amusing, pre-taped Xanax: Gay Summer Weddings ad parody) proved about as funny as running your winning Powerball ticket through the washing machine.

Yet while Ben Affleck‘s introduction into the “Five-Timers Club” certainly won’t go down as a particularly good episode, there were some rewards in store for those who didn’t shut off their TV sets and call it an early night. (Be honest: Vanessa Bayer and Cecily Strong’s brain-damaged former porn stars are always worth the price of staying up late: “One time I got banged through a glass ceiling. I changed everything for women. Turns out I’m a feminist!”)

RELATED | Bill Hader Announces Saturday Night Live Departure: ‘It Has to Happen at Some Point’

The installment also served as a farewell to Bill Hader (who earlier this week announced his intent to exit SNL) and (presumably) to Fred Armisen, who bade a sentimental (if not in any way funny) adieu in a musical number featuring Carrie Brownstein, Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Kim Gordon, Steve Jones, and J Mascis. (Call me grouchy, but I say if you’re going out, go out with a laugh, dammit!)

Oh, and a random thought: Am I the only one wondering about Tim Robinson and Jay Pharoah’s SNL fates, too? The former made almost no impression in his debut season, while the latter has appeared so infrequently in recent weeks I wonder if he’s picked up some lucrative side gig that’s pulled him away from Studio 8H. Only time will tell, I suppose…

Anyhow, below are my picks for the week’s best and worst sketches:

BEST: New Beginnings Camp
Affleck played an “ex-gay” camp counselor fruitlessly attempting to inflict “reparative therapy” onto a group of LGBT teenagers. I loved the total lack of expression on  Bayer’s face after awkwardly kissing her hubby, but Taran Killam stole the show as Affleck’s former “roommate” and fellow camp employee whose rendition of “I Love the Straight Life” proved too fabulous not to reinvigorate the dormant romance. (Video embed sadly not available.)

BEST: Stefon’s Wedding
Oh how I’m gonna miss Stefon — especially since his final Weekend Update report gave us the rundown on just one “New York’s hottest club.” (My fave part? Stefon’s aside about making the “dean’s list” at “UTI”: “Dean Cain’s list of homeboys not to mess with!”) After Seth Meyers’ admonishment, though, Stefon stormed off in a huff, declaring he’d met someone else — and was headed off to get married. Cue romcom “chasing your man to the altar” montage, but when Seth got to the church, it was filled with the freaky-deaky clubbers Stefon’s been chatting about for years — along with groom Anderson Cooper! True love always wins in these scenarios, though, and after Cooper got his clock cleaned, Seth and Stefon (with the help of DJ Baby Bok Choy and a fluffy Gremlin) raced back to the Weekend Update set to be showered with rice and announced as “Seth and Stefon Meyers.” Mazel tov!

WORST: Al Sharpton Cold Open
Here’s hoping the Season 38 finale also means a goodbye to Kenan Thompson’s aggressively unfunny Sharpton impersonation. Actually, is “impersonation” too strong a word for donning a wig and acting smugly satisfied by your own tired zingers?

WORST: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Bengo F*&% Yourself
On paper, this could’ve been funny: The Iranian president directs and stars in a film about the making of Affleck’s Oscar-winning Argo, simply to expose it as so many lies. But really, when the best punch line is a tired diss on the lameness of Gigli, then you know the writers already had their brains on their summer vacations. (And no, I didn’t laugh once at Armisen’s Ahmadinejad muttering “pahk the cah in Hahvahd yahd” before every line he delivered as Affleck.)

WORST: 1930s Grifters
Hader as a layabout conman, a totally underutilized Kate McKinnon as a baby-faced prostitute and Ben Affleck as a businessman who becomes their potential mark. Did somebody lose the cue cards before the trio took the stage? I’ve got no other explanation for how or why this went down. Excruciating!

What did you think of Affleck’s hosting gig? What were your picks for best and worst moments? Will you miss Hader and/or Armisen? Would you miss Robinson or Pharoah if they left, too? Happy to see Stefon finally get his man? And what would you do to make Season 39 better? Sound off in the comments!

(Full contest rules at FamilyGuy.com/IamStewie.)

TVLine's Performer of the Week: Bill Hader

A weekly feature in which we spotlight shining stars

THE PERFORMER | Bill Hader

THE SHOW | The Comedy Central Roast of James Franco

THE AIRDATE | Sept. 2, 2013

THE PERFORMANCE | You’ve got to admire Bill Hader’s commitment and originality. During Comedy Central’s Roast of James Franco, the former Saturday Night Live standout tapped into those impressive Studio 8H skills and broke from the rest of the comic pack by coming out dressed as a character. In a clever turn, Hader addressed the audience and razzed the other guests as the President of Hollywood, a ’70s-esque old-timer in a tracksuit who’s the overlord of the entertainment industry.

Never breaking his tough talking, straight-shooter persona (complete with exaggerated deep voice and borderline disgusted stare), Hader had us laughing with his sharp jabs.

“You’re welcome. In no other place but Hollywood, could these 10 people make the kind of money they make and sleep with the kind of people they sleep with,” he started.

And the hits kept on coming:

On Seth Rogen’s movie The Guilt Trip: “If I wanted to watch two ugly Jews weaving through traffic, I’d watch Seinfeld’s web series.” (Points for sorta obscurity!)

On Aziz Ansari’s range: “You’re like the Daniel Day-Lewis of only doing one thing.”

And to Jeff Ross: “Like Enterprise Rental Car on Christmas Day, I do not have a vehicle for you.”

With every pithy “You’re welcome,” we just wanted to say, “Thank you,” for the hilarious bit.

HONORABLE MENTION | Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson for bringing Luther‘s alternately suspenseful and terrifying third season to a spectacularly satisfying conclusion. Yes, we, too, were bummed that Wilson’s killer vamp sat out Episodes 1-3, but, man, series creator Neil Cross managed to pack a whole season’s worth of memorable John/Alice moments into Friday’s fourth and final installment — and Elba and Wilson delivered on Every. One. Of. Them. From Alice’s covert introduction (we knew it was her!), to their hilarious/sexy catch-up session at her pad, to their swoon-sational reunion on the bridge in the hour’s closing minutes, both actors exhibited the kind of effortless, schmaltz-free chemistry most TV couples would kill for. They left us wanting more. — and more we better get. (We’re talking to you Cross/Elba/Wilson/BBC; make it happen!).

What performance knocked your socks off this week?
